Frequently Asked Questions
How do I become a member?
If you’re a man who cares about community and would like to become a member 100 GOOD MEN WHO GIVE A DAMN, please go to “Join” and complete the Membership & Commitment Form.
How long do the meetings last?
The actual meetings will take no more than one hour. There are opportunities to socialize both before and after the formal part of each one-hour meeting.
I’m a new member, what should I expect at a meeting?
Expect to be greeted by a volunteer and asked to sign-in at the registration desk where you should receive a Name Tag and a voting ballot for later in the evening.
There will usually be a cash bar and time for mingling with fellow members. Also, at some time, you may have your photo taken for our Gallery. This is totally voluntary.
Registration typically begins at 6:00pm with a cash bar and time for networking and socializing. Meeting begins at 7:00pm Sharp.
The 3 selected Charities are announced and then, (in the order their nomination was received) each is allowed five minutes to present their story, followed by a short Q&A.
After hearing all three, you will then vote, by secret ballot, for the Charity you feel best deserves our support, your ballot will be collected, then all ballots will be tallied to determine a majority winner,
The winner will be announced and you will then write your cheque for $100 (or more if you choose) to the Charity that received the majority of the votes, whether or not it was the Charity that you voted for.
Meetings take less that an hour but you are invited to hang around to enjoy more socializing .
What if I cannot attend a meeting?
If unable to attend a quarterly event, please send your regrets by e-mail then place a blank cheque for $100.00 in an envelope marked “100 Good Men Who Give a Damn” and give it to a fellow member who will be going to the meeting. You have option of assigning your vote via “Proxy Ballot” or waiving your right to vote for a Charity.
Can I just give you four post-dated $100 checks?
Ideally no. We want to see you at our meetings. However, if you know you’re going to miss all the meetings, contact us and we’ll see if we can help.
What do you do with my personal information?
100 Good Men Who Give a Damn collects your personal information (including name, email address, phone number, and mailing address) mostly for the purpose of keeping in contact with our members and mailing tax receipts. 100 Good Men Who Give a Damn will not sell, give or otherwise share your personal information with any third party without your express consent. If a member wants to remain anonymous they must let us know at the time of joining.
Can I bring a friend to a quarterly meeting?
Yes, however, they will be required to join as a member at the door.
“Giving” means making a commitment. So on arrival, your friend would need to register before being admitted.
Is membership limited to 100 men?
No, that would not be fair to the charities, would it? If we can make a BIG impact with 100 men, why not invite a friend and make an even BIGGER impact? Remember, we’re doing this for the charities and our community, not just for us.
How are the three presenting charities chosen?
Members nominate charities. Nominees are first vetted for eligibility then three are drawn randomly three weeks before a quarterly meeting. Those three organizations are invited to give a short five-minute presentation at the meeting. If a charity declines or is unable to present, another charity is chosen from the database. The identity of the three presenting charities is not revealed until the meeting is underway.
What is the criteria to qualify for charity nomination?
The charity must be a registered charitable organization able to provide charitable tax receipts for donations. National or international charities are ineligible as the focus is on contributing to our local community. Organizations with a national link may be nominated however, provided the request is specifically for a project to be delivered the Town of Georgian Bluffs, the Town of Meaford or the City of Owen Sound, Ontario. The funds must stay in our community. Charities who present at a meeting but are not chosen to receive funds may be nominated again after 6 months. Charities who do receive funds may be nominated again after 24 months.
How do I nominate a charity?
When a member joins, they may nominate up to 3 charities before each quarterly meeting. This can be done through our website. Click on the “Charities” menu where you will also find a list of suggested charities serving Owen Sound, Georgian Bluffs and Town of Meaford. For more information, you can click on their Logo to link to each of their respective websites. You are not limited to Charities on this list. See “Charity Criteria”.
Can a charity nominate itself?
No. Charities may only be nominated by a member. Our members are not just interested in nominating and donating – they want to learn about local causes. They may want to volunteer, sponsor or serve on a board or committee. They may even become a regular donor or benefactor. We invite eligible charities to visit our website and Like us on Facebook. By getting themselves known to our members, they have a good chance of being nominated. Then it’s down to the “luck of the draw” as to which three will present on the night.
Can I just send the donation to the charity myself?
You can always make an additional donation to the successful charity, or any of the charities that make a presentation, however for the purposes of 100 Good Men Who Give a Damn, we make our collective donation to the charity receiving the majority vote. We want to make and IMPACT.
How much of my donation goes to the administration costs of 100 Good Men Who Give a Damn?
Absolutely zero! 100 Good Men Who Give a Damn is organized and operated entirely by volunteers. 100% of funds raised at a meeting go directly to the chosen charity!
